Host Bill Hinchberger talks with Lesser about his book A Discontented Diaspora: Japanese Brazilians and the Meanings of Ethnic Militancy, 1960–1980 , Japanese-Brazilian identity and the differences between identity politics in Brazil and the United States. Lesser also provides tips for visitors to Liberdade, São Paulo’s “Japantown.” Lesser’s book is available in Portuguese under the title Uma Diáspora Descontente: os nipo-brasileiros e os significados da militância étnica 1960-1980 .
